Goal-line cameras prove their worth in Eredivisie

After a well-earned winter break, during which the fields remained empty and the goal nets untouched, national football is back in full swing. With the resumption of the Eredivisie, we want to reflect on a technological advance that transformed the first half of the season: the goal-line cameras.

These cameras, now installed in all Eredivisie stadiums, have proven their worth in accurately determining the most debated question in football: was it a goal? In the first half of the competition, VAR used Goal Line Replay in six cases to assess whether the ball had completely crossed the goal line. This led to one significant reversal, where a goal was indeed awarded after consulting the footage.

The new technology, consisting of four high-frame rate cameras in each stadium, strengthens the VAR's toolbox with precision images that are essential in judging crucial moments of play. Whether it is a goal, penalty, red card, or identifying the right player in the heat of the moment; the cameras offer a clearer view of the action.

In total, the cameras have so far been consulted 169 times by VAR to verify referee decisions. Of these checks, 17 have resulted in a revision of the original decision. Across 144 matches, VAR has reviewed the footage more than 800 times and recommended a review in 56 cases. The average VAR check lasted 99 seconds, showing that efficiency remains in the game.

A notable moment where Goal Line Replay played a decisive role was at the FC Utrecht - Ajax match, where a goal by Mike van der Hoorn was awarded after careful review. This incident highlights the impact technology has on the fairness and final outcomes of matches.

The introduction of goal-line cameras marks a new phase in Dutch football, with technology and sport coming together to ensure the integrity of the game. As we look forward to the rest of the matches, we can say with confidence that the truth on the pitch is now clearer than ever before.
